November 8, 2006: Mustangs 1 - South Meck 2

June 23, 2008
By iHigh Staff of Myers Park High School

Mustangs 1 - South Meck 2
November 8, 2006 -
Myers Park was ready for the game. The stands were packed with Mustang fans ready to watch their team beat South Meck - a team they had waxed twice during the regular season (3-1; 5-0). The Mustangs had the talent, the teamwork, the dedication and the will. What they did not have Wednesday night was luck. That went to South Meck. Although the Mustangs control the action and outshoot the Sabres by a margin well over 2-to-1, the Sabres are able to take advantage of their opportunities. Given a PK in the first half, the Sabres enter the half with a one goal lead. Mustang fans aren't worried. They've seen what their team can do. Without a doubt, the Mustangs are the best second half team around.

Myers Park pours it on in the second half, and their efforts are rewarded when McLean McGarry's throw in finds the amazing Travis Cook. G-O-A-L! Now were talking. The Mustangs hit the post. The Mustangs have two goals called back. Opportunities are missed. But it is the Sabres who find the back of the net and take the lead 2-1. Still, there's 18 minutes left in the game and the Mustangs have the momentum.

Whistles are blowing at every turn, yellow cards are flying and South Meck is given a red, but none of this matters. Lady Luck showed up at MPHS. Unfortunately, she was on the visitor's bench. Congratulations to South Meck on your 2-1 victory. Now go out and show the rest of the state what it's all about in the SW4A.

While there's disapointment at the lack of attention to brackets for the SW4A, is there bitterness or sour grapes on the part of this team? No way! The final whistle blows and Mustang fans are stunned; the squad collapses on the field in utter disbelieve. Sometimes the better team does not win. It's why we play the game. But we watch our boys rise to their feet, congratulate the victors, and in a united front approach the stands giving us their applause. Thank you boys, but it is us who applaud you. The 2006 Myers Park Men's Soccer team is a class act, one that will be hard to follow.

A special thank you to our seniors. As we watch you leave that special MPHS pitch for the very last time, we can't help but to reflect on how it seemed only yesterday when you first arrived. You have matured into outstanding young men and have given so much to your fans and your school. Take with you these wonderful memories. Remember, this is only the beginning!

The 2006 Myers Park Seniors:
